Blogpoll Preliminary Ballot: Week 13

Rank Team Delta
1 Alabama 1
2 Oklahoma 3
3 Texas
4 Florida
5 Texas Tech 4
6 Penn State
7 Southern Cal
8 Utah
9 Oklahoma State
10 Boise State
11 Georgia
12 Ohio State
13 Missouri
14 TCU
15 Oregon State 5
16 Cincinnati 3
17 Georgia Tech 6
18 Florida State 8
19 Boston College 7
20 Michigan State 5
21 Ball State
22 Iowa 4
23 Brigham Young 7
24 Pittsburgh 7
25 North Carolina 3

Dropped Out: Maryland (#18), Miami (Florida) (#24), California (#25).

Games Watched: Next to none, aside from the Michigan-Ohio State and Texas Tech-Oklahoma. I got bits and pieces of a bunch of other games though.

Questions: I have a hard time with how to rank #2-5, but I think the difference in home field advantage for Oklahoma and Texas against each other and Tech doesn’t diminish the fact that Tech was non-competitive against a team the Horns lost to. The bottom of the poll is something of a disaster right now, and I have no clue what to do with the ACC. Help me.

I’m the guy who said to switch TT and Alabama last week since TT travels so not-so-well.

I think if you leave 1-5 like you have them, you will be vindicated this weekend since OK is likely to beat OKST on the road, a team TX just barely got by at home.

But since TX beat OK by 10 on a neutral field only 6 weeks ago, they really deserve to be ahead of OK this week. The transitive property cannot be given the same weight as head-to-head.

By your logic, Texas should be ahead of Oklahoma, who should be ahead of Texas Tech, who should be ahead of Texas… wait a minute, something has gone radically wrong here.

I’m the UT should be above OU camp. UT lost on the road in a game that was capped off with one of the most ridiculous plays of the year. OU woodshedded that team in Norman.

I think you have to drop Tech out of the discussion because they got housed, and then head to head, UT beat OU.

I agree with Texas above Oklahoma. In that 3-game series that violates transitivity, Texas is the only one of the teams without a true home game. They also beat Mizzou, a top 10 team (or close) whereas Oklahoma does not play them (regular season). I give more value to quality wins and Texas has 3 over top 10 (or close) teams, while Oklahoma only has 1. Maybe if they beat Okie State big, the 2 could flip.

I think you could even boost Penn-State ahead of Texas Tech; they have quality wins over both OSUs (is Oregon State called OSU?).

I do not think UNC should be ranked at all. I would put an up and coming WVU team or Ole Miss there (Ole Miss with a good win recall). I also do not think Pitt should be ranked. Put in NW, which has same Big10 record as Iowa and head-to-head win.

With the ACC, it appear as though Florida State and GA Tech are the best teams and deserve the rankings you gave. However, BC and VA Tech have the inside track for the title game. Also, being in SEC country, Florida State and GA Tech have tough games this weekend. Hopefully, they keep those games competitive to justify their rankings or else you will have the same ACC uncertainty next week.

For all the times they’ve destroyed Michigan I’m no USC fan, but if you lined up all of the 1 loss teams on a neutral field, would you really take OU, UT, Fla, TTech and PSU straight up against the Trojans? (and yes I realize I’m discounting entirely the ‘earned it’ aspect that OU and UT can claim at this point)

I agree, Northwestern over Iowa. Northwestern needs the support to get a decent bowl, which they deserve. Plus, they have a hot coach.

    Hey Tim,

I left post #1. Guess I should stop being lazy and get a username.

Paul made my point better than I did. Tech is obviously out of the picture and breaks the circuity, which leaves Texas v. Oklahoma as the head-to-head.

BUT I think a convincing win this week by OK over OKST would give enough weight, in a transitive sort of way, to moving OK over TX in spite of the head to head. And since I think that is the most likely scenario, your poll is fine, if premature.

But I’m sure we’ve all been premature.
