End of the Road

Today is the day: Varsity Blue is coming to an end. Starting Monday, yours truly, along with Paul and Formerly Anonymous, will join the world of MGoBlog.

VB started in the winter of 2005, primarily because I was tired of copy-and-pasting my preview of the Nebraska game onto various Michigan-related message boards. Over time, I eventually got my first link from MGoBlog (as I scouted an IM basketball game featuring various football players – and wrongly predicted Johnny Sears would blow up in 2007), added Paul as a writer/technical guy, moved from Blogspot to a self-hosted domain, spilled my guts about missing the days of 2006, and added Formerly Anonymous to the repertoire to blog about baseball. Along the way, Varsity Blue became the second-most popular Michigan blog out there, and one of the more popular college sports blogs in general. I couldn’t have done any of it without the readers, and I thank all of you for the support you’ve given me over the nearly 4 years of this site’s existence.

Like most Michigan bloggers, I was inspired by Brian, and I’m certainly honored to join MGoBlog, but that doesn’t mean I’m not sad to leave VB. I hope to see some of this site’s readers follow us over to the mothership, and it’s been a fun, fun ride.

Varsity Blue is my favorite UM blog and I hope you will reconsider. After Brian took vengeance on a 14-year-old by posting his private phone number and email address (because Brian didn’t like his forum posts), I stopped reading mgoblog. Brian likes to compare himself to serious journalism, but if he did that in the Free Press or News, he would be fired, sued, and never work again. Last I saw, he refused to apologize, saying only that it was unwise (due to the legal risk). I hope you will consider what you’re name will be associated with and continue here.

Don’t sell yourself short – Sears did sort of blow up, in a way.

Always loved your work, and am glad to see you are joining Brian over at MGoBlog.
It seems appropriate to me that the same week that one Ann Arbor media icon (the AA Snooze) closes its doors, another brings some excellent people on board to consolidate its position as the foremost source for news and analysis of Michigan sports.
Good luck with the new gig, I am glad to see that the Madej is aware enough to realize that in a post-AA News world, the blogging community is an important part of media.

  21. Old Blue says...

    Congrats!

Hopefully this won’t mean the end of the only place I can find good lacrosse coverage.

Thanks guys, but I think it is a mistake, I just found this website in the last few months and so have others, i think it would have grown from here. I think you ended it prematurely.

  28. I know nothing says...

Dark, dark day. I actually started reading this before MGOBLOG. Your recruiting info is damn near $$ worthy. I hope you have enjoyed doing it as much as we have enjoyed reading it. Thanks many times over.

  29. pz says...

    Great run, guys.

I’ve always enjoyed the site, and li particularly liked the intimacy of the comments section – now when I post something on mgoblog, I won’t know that one of you is reading it.

This has to be a record for comments already, right?

Either way, keep it real, and hopefully there will be some way to keep the VB brand / feel alive over at mgb.

  30. Chris says...

How can this be? I left mblog because their recruiting coverage was terrible. Hope to see your info. there.

  31. Mick says...

Writing from the tiny Principality of Liechtenstein (and planing on attending MSU @ UM in 2010): That way I only have to follow one blog ;-) Keep up the football recruting up, cause that’s the primary reason I sticked around here.

  32. Albert says...

I consider UMVB at least on par with MgoBlog or any other blog, for that matter. To me you guys were straight-shooting, no BS, no wasted time, get to the point type of blog. Truly professional in every sense, I wish you and MgoBlog the best of success!!

  33. Acai Auctions says...

It was a great run for sure.
