Blogpoll Preliminary Ballot: Week 11

Sorry this is so late. I often confuse these “AM” and “PM” things you hear so much about.

Rank Team Delta
1 Texas Tech 2
2 Alabama
3 Texas 1
4 Oklahoma 2
5 Florida 2
6 Penn State 5
7 Southern Cal 1
8 Utah 1
9 Oklahoma State 4
10 Georgia 2
11 Boise State 1
12 Missouri 1
13 Ohio State 1
14 TCU 3
15 Michigan State
16 Brigham Young
17 Virginia Tech 9
18 Pittsburgh 2
19 North Carolina 7
20 California 2
21 Maryland 2
22 Florida State 1
23 Ball State 3
24 Georgia Tech 7
25 Tulsa 3

Dropped Out: Minnesota (#21), West Virginia (#24), LSU (#25).

Games Watched: NIU-Ball State, 1st half of TCU-Utah (plus the highlights), Virginia Tech-Maryland, Michigan-Minnesota, Ohio State-Northwestern, Portions of Texas-Baylor, Portions of Michigan State-Purdue, The end of Illinois-Western Michigan, Alabama-LSU, Penn State-Iowa, Portions of Florida Satte-Clemson, Oklahoma State-Texas Tech, Portions of Vanderbilt-Florida, BC-Notre Dame.

Things I’m Iffy About:

  • #1 and #2. Texas Tech’s schedule has a worse back end, seeing as how they played TWO(!) 1-AA schools, and Alabama played none. However, the top of the resume is much better, as Texas Tech has beaten a pair of top 10 teams, whereas Alabama’s best win is… in overtime against a not-very-good LSU unit? Alabama has also struggled much more with the teams on their schedule, whereas Texas Tech has blown out pretty much everyone except Texas. For now, I’ll give the benefit of the doubt to the team with the better wins, not the one with fewer bad teams on the schedule.
  • Not having Oklahoma State ahead of Utah. However, they do have 2 losses (to the Utes’ 0), regardless of against whom those losses came. Aside from the #1 wins on the resume (which give OK State a slight edge) and losses on the resume (which gives Utah a slight edge), I think the resumes aren’t as far off as you’d think. Utah is ahead of the Cowboys until someone convinces me otherwise.
  • TCU over Michigan State. IT looks like MSU wins that comparison easily, on second review. Those teams will be switched on the final ballot unless someone tries to convince me why they shouldn’t be.
  • The order after #15 or so. I feel like there are a lot of comparisons that are similar enough I just threw the teams in there.

Part of the reason for huge deltas is that I managed to not
rank North Carolina last week. Have at it. The more comments, the better my ballot ends up.

Blogpoll Final Ballot: Week 10

Rank Team Delta
1 Penn State 1
2 Alabama 1
3 Texas Tech 4
4 Texas 3
5 Oklahoma State
6 Oklahoma 2
7 Florida 1
8 Southern Cal 2
9 Utah 1
10 Boise State 4
11 TCU 2
12 Georgia 3
13 Missouri 1
14 Ohio State 3
15 Michigan State 1
16 Brigham Young 1
17 Georgia Tech 9
18 California 6
19 Maryland
20 Pittsburgh 1
21 Minnesota 4
22 Tulsa 4
23 Florida State 3
24 West Virginia 2
25 LSU 2

Dropped Out: South Florida (#22), Iowa (#25).

Changes from Draft: I shook up the area from 17-21 a bit, based on some pretty good advice from commenter kowisja. Some of the delta numbers may seem a bit weird, but that’s partially due to my attempts to improve my resume ranking each week (going back and comparing past weeks more in-depth) in addition to taking the most recent week’s games into account.

Blogpoll Preliminary Ballot: Week 10

Rank Team Delta
1 Penn State 1
2 Alabama 1
3 Texas Tech 4
4 Texas 3
5 Oklahoma State
6 Oklahoma 2
7 Florida 1
8 Southern Cal 2
9 Utah 1
10 Boise State 4
11 TCU 2
12 Georgia 3
13 Missouri 1
14 Ohio State 3
15 Michigan State 1
16 Brigham Young 1
17 Minnesota
18 California 6
19 Maryland
20 Pittsburgh 1
21 Georgia Tech 5
22 Tulsa 4
23 Florida State 3
24 West Virginia 2
25 LSU 2

Dropped Out: South Florida (#22), Iowa (#25).

Games Watched: Michigan-Purdue :(, Texas-Texas Tech, Florida-Georgia, Pitt-ND, and a bunch more I’ll be watching over the next couple days.

Things I’m not quite sure about: The comparison between Oklahoma and OK State, now that Oklahoma has a really impressive win. Moving down USC after a big win, though I think Florida deserved to move up. Moving Boise State up that much after beating a really ho-hum opponent. Georgia only dropping to #12, though I can’t think of anyone that really deserves to move up over them. Cal skyrocketing up after a close win. Moving Georgia Tech up 5 after a really close win over a team that barely makes the poll. Tulsa not dropping completely out after losing to a really bad Arkansas team, when they have few impressive wins. The bottom few teams in general, though I can’t really think of anyone else to go there.

This is probably the best I’ve felt about a draft ballot since the first couple weeks of the year. If I’m forgetting/missing out on anything, leave it in the comments for appropreiate tweaks before the final is due Wednesday morning.

Blogpoll Final Ballot: Week 9

Rank Team Delta
1 Texas
2 Penn State
3 Alabama
4 Oklahoma 3
5 Oklahoma State 1
6 Southern Cal 2
7 Texas Tech 1
8 Florida 2
9 Georgia 4
10 Utah 1
11 Ohio State 2
12 Missouri 3
13 TCU
14 Boise State 5
15 Brigham Young 6
16 Michigan State 10
17 Minnesota 3
18 Tulsa 8
19 Maryland 5
20 Florida State 3
21 Pittsburgh 2
22 South Florida 10
23 LSU 9
24 California 2
25 Iowa 1

Dropped Out: Ball State (#16), Georgia Tech (#18), Northwestern (#22), Wake Forest (#25).
Changes from draft: PSU and Alabama swapped. Alabama has the best win (over Georiga) between the two of them. However, other than that, they’ve played nearly nobody, and have struggled with a lot of crappy teams.

Oklahoma bumped back into the top 5, after seeing how good their schedule actually has been this year (and they’ve taken care of everyone except Texas).

Georgia moves up a bit, because dropping them as low as I did in the preliminary ballot was something of an accident. However, their inclusion in the top 10 should end this week against Florida, unless the Gators lose and make the downward move.

Michigan State moved up ahead of Minnesota, because Minnesota’s resume has been pretty weak so far, aside from their win over Illinois. Also, I don’t think their current level of success is sustainable.

If there’s anything else you want explained, let me know. Some of the movements are due to the results on the field this past weekend, and some of them are because I did a much stricter job ranking on resume (i.e. Oklahoma moving up). If you have any specific gripes, let me know in the comments and I’ll take them into account in next weeks ballot.

As is becoming disturbingly common, I kinda hastily threw this together (though this week, I did have the time to actually watch some games). Help me make it nice and shiny before Wednesday.

Blogpoll Final Ballot: Week 8

Rank Team Delta
1 Texas 1
2 Penn State 1
3 Alabama 2
4 Oklahoma State 4
5 Georgia 2
6 Texas Tech 6
7 Oklahoma 2
8 Southern Cal 2
9 Ohio State
10 Florida 6
11 Utah 1
12 South Florida 3
13 TCU 13
14 LSU
15 Missouri 2
16 Ball State 9
17 Florida State 3
18 Georgia Tech 8
19 Boise State 1
20 Minnesota 3
21 Brigham Young 10
22 Northwestern 4
23 Pittsburgh 1
24 Maryland 2
25 Wake Forest 4

Dropped Out: Kansas (#16), Virginia Tech (#17), Michigan State (#19), North Carolina (#24).

Changes:
Shuffled a couple things at the top, and replaced Vanderbilt with Pitt near the bottom. I also bumped LSU down a spot (who have they beaten that is any good? And their lone loss happened to be by 30 points), which had a side effect of moving TCU up a spot, though I’m a little uncomfortable having them that high.

As it turned out, my draft ballot wasn’t quite as bad as I had been expecting it to be.

Yet again, I found myself not in control of which games I got a chance to watch. I also just threw teams on it pretty randomly if I wasn’t quite sure what to do. I’ll need a lot of help making something coherent out of this mess:

Rank Team Delta
1 Texas 1
2 Penn State 1
3 Alabama 2
4 Oklahoma State 4
5 Texas Tech 7
6 Georgia 1
7 Oklahoma 2
8 Southern Cal 2
9 Ohio State
10 Florida 6
11 Utah 1
12 LSU 2
13 South Florida 2
14 TCU 12
15 Missouri 2
16 Ball State 9
17 Florida State 3
18 Georgia Tech 8
19 Boise State 1
20 Minnesota 3
21 Brigham Young 10
22 Northwestern 4
23 Maryland 3
24 Vanderbilt 2
25 Wake Forest 4

Dropped Out: Kansas (#16), Virginia Tech (#17), Michigan State (#19), Pittsburgh (#22), North Carolina (#24).

8 Oklahoma State 5
9 Ohio State 2
10 Utah 2
11 Brigham Young 1
12 Texas Tech 2
13 Missouri 9
14 LSU 8
15 South Florida 1
16 Kansas 1
17 Virginia Tech 2
18 Boise State 2
19 Michigan State 2
20 Florida State 2
21 Wake Forest 5
22 Pittsburgh 2
23 Minnesota 3
24 North Carolina 2
25 Ball State 1

Dropped Out: Vanderbilt (#15), Illinois (#18), Kentucky (#23), Northwestern (#25).

Changes: Reinserted South Florida, whose original omission was just an oversight. I also added Ball State towards the end of the poll, because they should be rewarded at least somewhat for their success so far. Swapped BYU and Utah, because BYU’s OOC schedule looks worse each week. TCU should give them a chance to bump up.

I apologize for the utter chaos contained herein. I literally have not had any time to look at my poll, and I don’t even know yet if some of the teams I’m ranking won or lost this past weekend. Help me out in the comments, I’ll watch more games, and everything should be sorted out by Wednesday.

Rank Team Delta
1 Alabama 1
2 Texas 3
3 Penn State
4 Florida 4
5 Oklahoma 4
6 Southern Cal 3
7 Georgia
8 Oklahoma State 5
9 Ohio State 2
10 Brigham Young
11 Utah 1
12 Texas Tech 2
13 Missouri 9
14 LSU 8

19 Florida State 3
20 Wake Forest 6
21 Pittsburgh 3

Blogpoll Final Ballot: Week 6

Rank Team Delta
1 Oklahoma
2 Alabama
3 Penn State 1
4 Missouri 1
5 Texas
6 LSU
7 Georgia 2
8 Florida 2
9 Southern Cal 2
10 Brigham Young 2
11 Ohio State 1
12 Utah 3
13 Oklahoma State
14 Texas Tech 2
15 Vanderbilt 3
16 South Florida 9
17 Kansas
18 Illinois 1
19 Virginia Tech 5
20 Boise State 1
21 Michigan State 5
22 Florida State 1
23 Kentucky 3
24 Pittsburgh 2
25 Northwestern 1

Dropped Out: Auburn (#14), Wisconsin (#20), Fresno State (#22), Wake Forest (#25).

Changes: Moved Illinois down slightly. Moved BYU down, because their schedule really does suck. Moved Northwestern in, replacing Cincinnati.

I still don’t think Auburn deserves to be ranked. Whether they’ve won or lost, the team has looked terrible either way. They’re not going to be ranked on the basis of “8th best team in the SEC is still the 9th best team in the country ROLLL TAAAAAAAHDE.”
