Brandon Minor looks to be Michigan’s top running back in 2009. Though he’s had a number of injuries in his career, Brandon hopes to be fully healthy for his senior year, and lead Michigan to a big turnaround. Hopefully, Brandon will be doing a lot of this:

Ryan Van Bergen was the winner of the only upset in the first round of the competition, defeating 4-seed Brendan Gibbons. He’ll start on the defensive line, and looks to anchor the run defense as a strongside defensive end. Last year, backing up Tim Jamison, Van Bergen collected 13 total tackles and 1 pass breakup.

Brendan Gibbons is an incoming freshman kicker out of Palm Beach, Florida. With Michigan’s kickers Jason Gingell and KC Lopata departing, somebody’s got to step in and kick the ball, no? Gibbons, among the nation’s top kicker recruits in the class of 2009, is the leading candidate.

Ryan Van Bergen enters his redshirt sophomore year, after earning some playing time as a strongside defensive end in 2008. He should be a starter this year, playing both defensive end and possibly the hybrid roles that new defensive coordinator GERG Robinson favors. If Van Bergen takes a big step forward in 2009, it will go a long way to settling the Wolverines defense.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

The poll will remain open for 7 days, closing at 5PM next Friday. Have your heart set on a particular candidate? Try to sway others in the comments. The full bracket is visible here.

Spring practice is over, having officially ended with a final practice on Tuesday (yes, after the Spring Game). The players will continue working with Barwis as long as they’re in town, but organized practices have come to an end.

Shall we recap what we know from spring, then?

Ryan Van Bergen, who was taken off the field on the Med Cart Saturday, should be fine.

Maize n Blue Nation provides a handy chart of the individual stats from the spring game. Tate Forcier, for the record, graded out with a passer efficiency rating (not a perfect metric, but them’s the ropes) of 270.80. Michigan’s total last year was 95.13, and Steven Threet led with a 105.26 rating. Standard caveats apply about our own defense maybe just being terrible, no contact on QBs, and simulating situations rather than a scrimmage.

MSC and MGoBlog recaps.

BTN Highlights:

Football news, other than that of the recruiting variety, should slow down in short order around here, unless something significant happens. Focus will shift slightly to baseball, general athletics, and other pursuits.
