A Final Pre-Signing Day Update, and Tomorrow’s Coverage

First, the important information: What will be going on at Varsity Blue tomorrow? Starting around 11AM or slightly before, we will be opening up a CoverItLive liveblog to cover all of Signing Day. I should be around most of the day, Brian from MGoBlog will be by around 11:30 or 12, and (perhaps most excitingly) Paul will attend the Rich Rodriguez press conference at 3pm.

Brian and I (and maybe MGoBlog recruiting intern TomVH, if he’s available) will be primarily answering questions from the other participants, in addition to sharing news as it becomes available to us. Paul will send in comments from the press conference via Twitter. This CIL will be more of a Q&A-type thing, rather than a free-for-all like the game chats usually are. It will run all day, so be sure to stop by every so often and check it out (the software archives all the comments, so you can drop by and see what you’ve missed).

Onto the final recruiting information:

Rivals has a convenient writeup of most of this information.

  • As mentioned before, Adrian Witty’s conference is at 11 (it should be the first of the day). Denard Robinson will either announce then or wait until 7PM. SoFlaFootball’s Luke Stampini thinks Michigan leads for Robinson, with Florida gaining.
  • DeQuinta Jones makes his final announcement at 1:30M ET.
  • Je’Ron Stokes, who reportedly has had Michigan make a resurgence in his recruitment after being considered all-but-dead earlier today, announces live on an internet at 3:00 on CSNPhilly.com. It will re-air on Comcast SportsNet Philly at 6:30.
  • Pearlie Graves signs at 9 and announces at noon.

Stop by tomorrow and take part in the CoverItLive; it should be really fun.

Quinton Washington Goes Blue

GoBlueWolverine hints (in header), and MGoBlog’s Brian Cook confirms, that offensive lineman Quinton Washington of Timberland, SC, has pledged his word to sign with Michigan tomorrow, and wil announce said decision at 3PM today. Washington, a 6-4, 300-lb player who will likely end up at offensive guard, is Michigan’s 21st commitment of the 2009 class, and hopefully opens the floodgates for a few more commitments to round out the recruiting year.

Recruiting Notes
Early in the recruiting process, it appeared to be highly likely that Washington would end up at one of the South Carolina schools. His coach, Art Craig, is well-connected within the state, and it seemed he might steer his top player to either the Cocks or Tigers. When his original top 5 came out in June, the Wolverines were listed… as #6. With Quinton not expecting to make a decision until after his senior year of football, however, the Wolverines had plenty of time to make up ground. Washington visited Michigan for the Wisconsin game, and witnessed the epic comeback in the Big House. On that visit, the Wolverine staff made sure Quinton knew they wanted him to suit up in maize-and-blue when he got to college. After that time, Michigan was never far from the top of Washington’s recruitment. Despite late pushes by Tennessee and Miami of Florida, the final decision came down to Michigan and South Carolina. Washington went with his heart and his head, picking the Wolverines.

Player Notes
Washington was listed as a top-10 player in South Carolina’s lowcountry before his senior season, and his high recruiting rankings would bear that out (he is a 4-star Guard to Rivals, a 3-star to Scout). Washington was honored for his skills not only by finishing as a finalist for the state’s Mr. Football award, but also by being selected to the Shrine Bowl, as well as the ESPNU/UnderArmour All-American Bowl. Washington’s game is strength, and he won the state Weightlifting Championship in the heavyweight division. Washington’s game will be improved by working a bit on his quickness in the zone scheme once he gets to college.

Recruiting Update: 1-5-09

Moved to Committed: 2009 MI DT William Campbell. Relief, joy, etc.
Removed: 2009 MN WR Bryce McNeal Clemson commit, 2009 MS DT Pernell McPhee, who signed his LOI with Mississippi State, and 2010 IL OL Christian Lombard, who committed to Notre Dame.

This weekend is expected to be a big one for recruiting. The Freep says:

West Monroe, La., defensive end Barkevious Mingo, an Army All-American; Greenwood, S.C., defensive end Sam Montgomery, an UnderArmour All-American; and Denard Robinson of Deerfield Beach, Fla., who Michigan is looking at for the quarterback…

Inkster wide receiver Cameron Gordon and offensive tackle Michael Schofield of Orland Park, Ill., are the only two Michigan commitments scheduled to officially visit for the Jan. 9 weekend. Three-star defensive end Bennie Logan of Coushatta, La., and three-star cornerback Demontre Hurst of Lancaster, Texas, are also scheduled to officially visit at that time…

Leesville, La., wide receiver Travante Stallworth (Auburn) and Lafayette, La., wide receiver Ricky Johnson (Arkansas) have scheduled official visits in Ann Arbor for the Jan. 9 weekend.

According to SoFlaFootball, Adrian Witty will also be in town:

“I’m going to Michigan on the 9th, Kansas State on the 16th, 17th, Florida on the 23rd, Middle Tennessee and FIU the following week,” said Witty.

And Sam Webb filled in a bit more a while back (caution: this is the oldest source, so it may be a bit out of date). He said on WTKA that Je’Ron Stokes will be in town as well, along with maybe Josh Hunter.

And that’s one full recruiting weekend. With no basketball game until Sunday morning, I’m curious as to what the recruits will spend their time doing. I wouldn’t be surprised if they went to a hockey game over the weekend, so if you’re interested in helping with the recruiting effort, get out and support the reigning CCHA champs, as well. Also of note: I’d assume the early-enrolling commits will be on hand for the recruiting visit, and it’s more likely that some of these guys have built up relationships with fellow members of the class of 2009. Will Tate Forcier, Big Will, and the gang be a valuable recruiting force for the rest of this class?

Look for another recruiting update later this week.

William Campbell Re-Goes Blue

Defensive tackle William Campbell from Detroit Cass Tech has re-committed to the Michigan Wolverines after a tense 4 months of decommitment. The second time around, the 6-5, 330-lber becomes Michigan’s 21st commit in the class of 2009.

Player Notes
Campbell is a physically dominating player who will need to work on his technique to become equally effective on the college level. He has extraordinary size, great brute strength, and surprising quickness. He is a two-way player in high school (even in all-star games), and has both the explosive first step to play tackle in college, and the intelligence and lateral quickness to move primarily to the offensive line. Whichever position he ends up playing, he will have to improve his technique. Campbell is currently in the midst of the Army All-American Bowl, where he has been one of the (few) consistent players.

Recruiting Notes
Campbell originally committed to Lloyd Carr’s Wolverines way back in the summer of 2007, before his junior season. When the coaching staff changed, Campbell reaffirmed his commitment to Rich Rodriguez. Despite that, he maintained all along that he would like to take official visits to other schools, if only to get out and see the world a bit. When other coaches (such as Pete Carroll and Les Miles) told Campbell that he could not visit their campuses if he was firmly committed to Michigan, Big Will rescinded his verbal commitment, and went on trips to Alabama, LSU, and Miami. On his official visit to Ann Arbor, Will rushed the court with Michigan students following basketball’s upset win over the Duke Blue Devils. However, coming into Army All-American week, Campbell told the media that he was eliminating Michigan from consideration. In the end, that was all a smoke screen as Campbell donned the Maize-and-Blue cap in the third quarter of the All-American Bowl.

Etc.
Campbell plans to enroll early, and has already done so, as was implied by a uniquname being created in the Umich directory in his name a week ago.
Campbell is also a teammate of 2010 CB/slot prospect Dior Mathis (along with the other two Cass Tech commits in the class of 2009). Landing Big Will can only help with Dior.

Taylor Lewan Goes Blue

Taylor Lewan, a 6-7, 280-lb offensive tackle from Scottsdale, Arizona. Lewan is a high school teamate of Michigan defensive end commit Craig Roh, and becomes the 21st commitment in Michigan’s class of 2009.

Recruiting Notes
Lewan was unknown early in the recruiting season, but a solid senior year at a new position and a new school has given him the ability to pick from a virtual who’s-who of colleges. Michigan offered him after the first few games of his final high school campaign, and when they landed Craig Roh, it greatly increased their chances to land Taylor. However, Lewan’s father is a native Minnesotan, and attended the University in St. Paul. Because of his father’s roots, Lewan has described himself as a displaced midwesterner. After a Minnesota visit, Lewan maintained that he would still take trips to Michigan and Oregon before making his decision. Taylor visited Ann Arbor the weekend of December 13th, and attended Michigan’s basketball victory against Eastern Michigan. Shortly thereafter, he told Rich Rodriguez that he wished to be a Michigan Wolverine, and committed to the Maize and Blue.

Player Notes
In his junior year, Taylor Lewan was a little-known defensive end prospect from Cactus Shadows High School in Scottsdale, Arizona. A transfer to Chaparral High School (a more successful program) and a move to the offensive tackle position (at which he is a better physical fit) gave Lewan a new lease on football life. He has become one of the fastes-rising prospects in the country over the course of a few short months. Lewan is a true offensive tackle, and a four-star prospect to both recruiting sites. He plays with an edge to his game that sets him apart from other offensive linemen. New teammate Craig Roh had a mutually-beneficial relationship on the practice field with Lewan, and the pair helped each other improve. Roh has described Lewan as a gym rat that won’t be outworked by anyone. Roh and Lewan also faced

Cameron Gordon Goes Blue

Wide receiver Cameron Gordon of Inkster, Michigan has given his word to sign with Michigan in February. Gordon is a 6-3, 210-lb player who has been measured at 4.6 in the 40-yard dash. He is Michigan’s 21st commit in the class of 2009.

Recruiting Notes
Gordon started the recruiting year as someone Michigan fans expected to likely end up in the Wolverines’ recruiting class. However, it certainly ended up taking significantly longer than they expected (although he had always planned to take his time with a decision). At the end of his junior year, he announced that he would be transferring from Melvindale High School to Inkster, where he would have a better opportunity to excel athletically. During the summer, he attended Michigan’s summer camp. The Wolverine coaches told him that they liked him more as a linebacker, and told him that he would receive an offer if he was willing to play at that position in college. With a noncommittal answer, Michigan’s offer took significantly longer to arrive than Gordon would have otherwise liked. When he finally received his offer in November, Gordon took a visit to Iowa, who had been on him all along. However, the allure of the Michigan offer was too much to pass up, and he committed to Michigan today.

Player Notes
Gordon is a big, physical receiver, with large measurables for the position. He lacks elite speed, but is able to beat defenders, using his body well and catching it at the highest point with his biug hands. However, Michigan fans liked the physical play he could bring to a linebacker position at the next level. It will be interesting to see whether he remains at receiver when he gets to the next level, or at least be open to a potential position switch.

Etc.
This year, Gordon was catching passes thrown by 2010 dual-threat quarterback prospect Devin Gardner, who is certainly one of the top targets on Michigan’s recruiting board. Securing a commitment from Gordon should go a long way to helping Michigan land his teammate in the next recruiting class.

Vladimir Emilien Goes Blue

Safety Vladimir Emilien of Plantation High School in Lauderhill, Florida has given his word to become a Michigan Wolverine. Emilien is a 6-1 190-lb player who has been clocked at 4.50 in the 40-yard dash. He is a 3-4-star prospect to each recruiting site, and and marks Michigan’s 20th commitment in the class of 2009.

Player Notes
Emilien had a fairly impressive offer sheet prior to his commitment, and is known as a safety prospect who can play either position. He has good speed in the defensive backfield, and could excel under the tutelage of Mike Barwis. He has fairly good size as well, and will likely end up as a big run-supporting strong safety. Emilien has a good reputation of going 100% on every play, a good sign that he meets Rodriguez’s all-important criterion of “loves football.”

Recruiting Notes
Emilien was offered at the beginning of May, though it seemed even at that time that he was bound for Ohio State. All indications from the beginning of his recruitment showed that he was a heavy Buckeye lean. However, the OSU class filled up fairly quickly, and there was no longer room for him in the class of ’09. When Ohio State allegedly pulled an offer from one of their commitments following an off-field incident, it appeared as though Emilien’s break may have come. However, he never committed to the Buckeyes, and after the Michigan State game official visit, the Wolverines may have taken over the top spot in his mind. Originally planning to announce yesterday, Vlad delayed his decision until today, and picked Michigan over Wisconsin, Ohio State, and Stanford.

Pearlie Graves Goes Blue

GoBlueWolverine reports defensive tackle Pearlie Graves (6-3, 260) from Tulsa East Central High School in Oklahoma has given his word to become a Michigan Wolverine. Graves is the 19th commit in the class of 2009. Also, he has an awesome name.

Player Notes
Graves plays primarily defensive end in high school, and that is where the recruiting sites list him. However, he has a big frame, and with a college-level strength and conditioning program, he will likely move to defensive tackle. He will likely end up as a penetrator who is more of a speedy defensive tackle than Big Ten fans are accustomed to.

Recruiting Notes
Graves was offered by Michigan in the summer, and the Wolverines immediately became one of his favorite schools. He took his visit to Ann Arbor this fall, and went home raving about his time there, particularly the academic support. Graves’s stock has been rising lately, with several programs offering him scholarships recently. He picked Michigan over Oklahoma State and others.

I’m actually just heading out to Ann Arbor, so I don’t have time for a substantive post, but kicker Brendan Gibbons out of Florida has committed to Michigan today. Much more when I have an internet connection again.
